Calcination — high-heat processing — burns away the organic fraction and nitrogen, leaving a stable mineral phosphorus source with two defining properties: it dissolves slowly, becoming available to plants over seasons rather than weeks, and it barely leaches, staying in the root zone where you put it instead of washing through.
