Product Description

A fast-growing annual clover that grazes bloat-safe, cuts 3–5 times a season, and feeds your soil its own nitrogen — a premier warm-season forage and cover crop.

Berseem Clover (Trifolium alexandrinum), also called Egyptian, Berseem, or Alexandrian Clover, is an annual legume — it completes its life in one season (a winter annual in mild climates). As a legume it does nitrogen fixation: it pulls nitrogen out of the air and stores it in the soil, banking fertility for the next crop. It establishes very fast and is a multi-cut forage — you can harvest or graze it 3–5 times in a season — producing high-protein (18–22% crude protein), highly digestible feed. A key advantage is that it does not cause bloat, making it one of the safest clovers for direct grazing. Our seed is uncoated and tested for purity and germination.

Key Benefits

Bloat-safe grazing: one of the safest clovers for direct grazing by cattle, sheep, and goats.

Multi-cut yield: 3–5 cuts per season of high-protein forage.

High-protein forage: 18–22% crude protein (the share of the plant that is protein), highly digestible.

Natural nitrogen fixer: 100–200 lbs of nitrogen per acre for the following crop.

Fast weed suppression: rapid canopy closure shades out warm-season weeds.

Clean, uncoated seed: no fillers, coatings, or dyes.

Best Uses

Annual forage and multi-cut hay production

     Bloat-safe rotational grazing

Cover crop and green manure (a crop grown to be worked back into the soil to enrich it)

Warm-season rotation crop and nitrogen banking

Weed suppression through rapid canopy establishment

Important Notes

Berseem is an annual forage and cover crop — not a residential lawn or turf grass, and it does not tolerate foot traffic. It needs consistent moisture and is less drought-tolerant than red clover or alfalfa, so irrigation extends the cutting season and total yield. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, which can invite root rot. Inoculate with Rhizobium trifolii before planting (uncoated seed is not pre-inoculated).

Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?

Every bag of Wicked Tuff Turf seed is selected for high purity and strong germination, and tested so you know what you are planting — consistent, clean, uncoated seed for farmers, land managers, and growers who demand performance.

Application Instructions

Conditions
USDA Zones 7–11 (fall-planted) or 3–6 (spring-planted); full sun; loam, clay loam, or silty soils; pH 6.0–8.0 (tolerates alkaline). Needs consistent moisture; avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Seeding Rate
15–25 lb per acre for a pure stand; 8–12 lb per acre in a multi-species mix.

How to Plant
Drill or broadcast ¼–½ inch deep onto a prepared seedbed with good seed-to-soil contact. Plant spring in northern zones or early fall in southern zones. Keep consistently moist through the 5–7 day germination (soil 50–75°F).
Inoculation
For best nitrogen fixation, inoculate before planting with Rhizobium trifolii — inoculation means coating the seed with the right helper bacteria so the clover can pull nitrogen from the air properly.

Cutting & Grazing
First cut in 45–60 days, then every 25–35 days. Cut at early bloom for the highest quality and leave a 3–4 inch stubble. Use rotational grazing and avoid grazing below 4 inches.
