Product Description

The fastest cover there is — a quick-sprouting grass that locks down bare dirt, greens up southern lawns over winter, and bows out on its own when summer comes.

Annual Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), also called Italian Ryegrass, is an annual — it completes its life in a single cool season and self-terminates in summer heat. That is the point: it is built for temporary jobs. It germinates in 5–10 days — the fastest ground coverage of any grass seed — and puts down a dense, fibrous root mass that holds topsoil and prevents erosion. It is the standard for overseeding warm-season (southern) lawns to keep them green while they are dormant in winter, and a classic nurse crop: it fills in fast to protect slower perennial grasses while they establish. It also acts as a nitrogen scavenger, capturing leftover soil nitrogen so it does not run off, then releasing it as the biomass breaks down. Our seed is uncoated and tested for purity and germination.

Key Benefits

Lightning-fast sprouting: up in 5–10 days — the quickest green cover available.

Superior erosion control: dense fibrous roots lock down topsoil and prevent washouts.

Winter overseeding champion: keeps southern warm-season lawns green through dormancy.

Nitrogen scavenger: captures residual soil nitrogen, reducing runoff.

Self-terminating: dies back in summer, leaving biomass as soil-building mulch.

Clean, uncoated seed: no fillers, coatings, or dyes.

Best Uses

     Cover crop and erosion control

Winter overseeding of warm-season lawns (southern US)

Temporary turf for construction sites, events, and quick cover

Nurse crop for perennial grass establishment

     Quick-establish forage and hay

Important Notes

This is a temporary grass. Annual Ryegrass naturally dies out in summer heat, so it is a cover crop, nurse crop, or seasonal/overseeding grass — not a permanent, year-round lawn. (If you want a permanent lawn, use Perennial Ryegrass or another perennial turf species.) It pairs well with winter rye, crimson clover, hairy vetch, and oats in cover-crop mixes.

Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?

Every bag of Wicked Tuff Turf seed is selected for high purity and strong germination, and tested so you know what you are planting — consistent, clean, uncoated seed for cover-crop managers, contractors, and homeowners who need fast cover.

Application Instructions

Conditions
USDA Zones 4–9; full sun to light shade; widely adaptable loam, clay, or sandy soils; pH 5.5–7.5; well-drained to moderately moist.

Seeding rate
New/temporary turf 6–8 lb per 1,000 sq ft; southern winter overseeding 5–10 lb per 1,000 sq ft; cover crop 25–40 lb per acre.

How to plant
Broadcast or drill ¼–½ inch deep. Plant in fall (September–November) or early spring. Keep moist for the first 5–10 days while it rapidly germinates; peak growth is fall, winter, and early spring.

Termination
