Product Description
The gold standard of premium horse hay — the clean, dust-free, leafy forage grass that the equine market asks for by name.
Timothy Grass (Phleum pratense) is a cool-season perennial — it grows in the cooler parts of the year and a stand lasts 3–5+ years (overseed thin stands to extend it). It is the most recognized hay grass in North America, the backbone of northeastern hay production for over two centuries. It is a bunch-type grass (it grows in upright tufts, topped by its distinctive cylindrical “cat's-tail” seed heads) and produces premium-quality, clean, dust-free, leafy hay that commands top prices — especially for horses, and as preferred forage for cattle, sheep, and goats. It is cold-hardy, performs well on heavier soils, and blends naturally with legumes like red clover and alfalfa for high-protein mixed hay. Our seed is uncoated and tested for purity and germination.
Key Benefits
• The premier equine choice: clean, dust-free, leafy hay horse owners seek out.
• Exceptional winter hardiness: a rugged perennial for the harshest northern winters.
• Reliable establishment: sprouts quickly and establishes easily on heavier soils.
• Superior blending: the classic alfalfa and red-clover companion for high-protein hay.
• Consistent yields: a dependable spring harvest, year after year.
• Clean, uncoated seed: no fillers, coatings, or dyes.
Best Uses
• Horse hay production (premium market)
• Livestock hay and pasture systems
• Timothy-alfalfa and timothy-clover mixes
• Northern New England and upper Midwest forage programs
• Small-acreage hay operations
Important Notes
Timothy has a shallow, fibrous root system. That is a double-edged trait: it makes the grass easy to establish, but it limits drought tolerance and makes it vulnerable to winter heaving. Plant it where rainfall is reliable (about 25+ inches annually) or where you can irrigate — avoid droughty, sandy soils. When grazing, leave a 3–4 inch stubble to protect those shallow roots and keep the stand healthy. This is a forage and hay grass, not a residential lawn or high-traffic turf.
Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?
Every bag of Wicked Tuff Turf seed is selected for high purity and strong germination, and tested so you know what you are planting — consistent, clean, uncoated seed for hay producers who sell into the premium market.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
USDA Zones 2–6; full sun to light shade; heavier clay-loam or silt-loam soils; pH 5.5–7.0; moderately well-drained, reliable rainfall (25+ inches) or irrigation.
Seeding rate
10–15 lb per acre for a pure stand; 6–10 lb per acre in a mix with legumes (a classic New England blend is 40% Timothy / 40% Alfalfa / 20% Red Clover).
How to plant
The seed is very small — surface-sow or plant no deeper than ¼ inch to ensure emergence. Plant late summer/early fall (preferred) or early spring. Keep moist through the 7–14 day germination.
Cutting & grazing
For the highest-quality hay, harvest at early head stage (typically June). If grazing, rotate and leave a 3–4 inch stubble to protect the shallow roots and maintain stand health.
