Product Description
Want a lawn that’s soft underfoot and doesn’t need a cabinet full of chemicals to look good? That’s what this fine-fescue blend is built for.
Old Cobblers Farm™ Wicked Tuff Turf Kid Safe Lawn is a soft, low-input cool-season family blend. It’s built around 55% fine fescue — creeping red fescue and Chewings fescue — which have thin, fine blades that make a softer surface than coarse tall-fescue mixes. Perennial ryegrass (25%) adds quick green-up, a little Kentucky bluegrass (10%) lends some self-repair, and a 10% annual ryegrass “nurse crop” (a fast, short-lived grass) covers the soil quickly while the rest establishes.
About the name: “Kid Safe” does not mean the bag contains special “safe” ingredients — it doesn’t. It reflects the agronomic reality of fine fescues, which need fewer chemical inputs. They require less nitrogen, resist many diseases naturally, and grow densely enough to crowd out weeds — so a fine-fescue lawn typically needs fewer fertilizer, fungicide, and herbicide applications. Add the soft texture, and you get a lower-input, family-friendly lawn. (One note: the Kentucky bluegrass here is a value 85/50 grade — it self-repairs but fills in more slowly than premium grades.)
Key Benefits
• Soft underfoot: 55% fine fescue makes a gentle, fine-bladed surface for bare feet and play.
• Lower chemical inputs: less nitrogen, plus natural disease/weed resistance — fewer applications overall.
• Shade-tolerant: one of the more shade-friendly blends; good under tree cover.
• Low-maintenance: among the lowest fertilizer needs; tolerates infrequent mowing.
• Pure seed: 100% pure with no fillers, coatings, or dyes.
Best Uses
• Families wanting a soft, lower-chemical lawn
• Shaded yards and properties with tree cover
• Low-maintenance situations with infrequent mowing
• Organic or natural lawn-care approaches
• New lawns and overseeding
Important Notes
• ⚠ Light-to-moderate traffic only: fine fescues recover slowly from wear — this lawn is NOT suited to sports or heavy pet (active-dog) traffic. It’s for soft, everyday family use.
• Shade-tolerant — not for hot, full-sun exposures (8+ hours), where fine fescues may thin; consider the Elite Fescue Blend for full sun.
• Needs well-drained loam or sandy loam — fine fescues struggle in heavy clay and dislike wet feet.
• Drought response is dormancy: it may brown in extended heat/drought, then recover when moisture returns.
• Do not over-fertilize — excess nitrogen damages fine fescues (causes thatch and disease); an organic slow-release feed is ideal.
• Seed only — not a fertilizer.
Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?
This is an honest, lower-input formula — 100% pure seed with no fillers, coatings, or dyes — built around soft fine fescues that need fewer chemical inputs to look good. It’s for families who want a gentle, low-fuss lawn and are happy to trade heavy-traffic toughness for softness and simplicity.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
-USDA Zones: 3–7
-Sun: 3–5 hours ideal; 2–3 minimum (shade-tolerant); avoid hot full sun (8+ hr)
-Soil pH: 5.5–6.5 (slightly acidic); well-drained loam or sandy loam — not heavy clay, no wet feet
Seeding Rate (per 1,000 sq ft and per acre)
-New lawns: 5–6 lb per 1,000 sq ft (≈ 220–260 lb per acre)
-Overseeding: 3–4 lb per 1,000 sq ft (≈ 130–175 lb per acre)
How to Plant
Rake the seed lightly into the top of the soil for good seed-to-soil contact — do not bury deep — and keep the surface moist while it establishes (ryegrasses in 5–7 days, fine fescues 14–21, the 85/50 bluegrass slowest at 21–35). Maintain at 3.0–4.0 inches (higher mowing reduces stress on fine fescues; they also tolerate infrequent mowing). Feed lightly — only 1–2 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year, ideally an organic slow-release product. Avoid excess nitrogen, which damages fine fescues and promotes thatch and disease.
