Product Description

Want a sharp, deep-green lawn that shrugs off summer heat and stays put under regular use? This premium fescue-led blend is built for exactly that.

Old Cobblers Farm™ Wicked Tuff Turf Elite Fescue Blend is a premium three-species cool-season lawn blend (“cool-season” = grasses that grow most in spring and fall). It leads with 50% improved tall fescue. “Improved” means a turf-type variety (TTTF) — finer-bladed, darker, and denser than the old coarse K-31 forage fescue — with better resistance to common turf diseases like brown patch. Improved perennial ryegrass (30%) adds fast cover and wear resistance, and 98/85 Kentucky bluegrass (20%) brings color and self-repair.

What sets it apart is the seed grade and the root depth. “98/85” means the bluegrass is 98% pure with 85% germination — a premium grade that comes up faster and more evenly than economy 80/70 seed. Tall fescue’s roots reach 4–6+ inches down (deeper than shallow-rooted grasses), which is why this blend has good-to-excellent drought tolerance and holds color through summer heat. Kentucky bluegrass spreads by rhizomes (underground stems) to repair worn areas. It is 100% pure seed with no fillers, coatings, or dyes.

Key Benefits

Drought-tolerant: deep 4–6+ in. tall-fescue roots reach moisture shallow grasses can’t.

Premium look: improved turf-type varieties give finer texture and darker color than K-31.

Premium grade: 98/85 bluegrass germinates more uniformly than economy seed.

Holds up to use: moderate-to-high traffic tolerance for backyard sports, pets, and busy lawns.

Self-repairing & pure: bluegrass rhizomes recover worn spots; 100% pure seed, no fillers or dyes.

Best Uses

Front lawns and high-visibility areas where appearance matters

     Full-to-moderate-sun properties

Backyard sports, pet areas, and busy family lawns

Transition-zone yards where straight bluegrass struggles in summer

New lawns and overseeding for density

Important Notes

Best in full to moderate sun — not for deep shade (under 4 hours sun); use a Sun & Shade mix instead.

Mow at 3.5 inches or higher (3.0 in minimum) — mowing high maximizes drought tolerance; not a low-mow turf.

This is a turf-type blend, not coarse K-31 forage fescue, and not a fine-fescue/bentgrass golf-course look.

Seed only — not a fertilizer.

Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?

This is a premium-grade formula — improved turf-type varieties plus 98/85 bluegrass, 100% pure seed with no fillers, coatings, or dyes — chosen to deliver drought tolerance, traffic resistance, and a deep-green, fine-to-medium textured lawn that holds its color and density season after season.

Application Instructions

Conditions
-USDA Zones: 3–7 (performs in the transition zone with proper management)
-Sun: 6–8 hours ideal; 4 hours minimum (sun-weighted blend)
-Soil pH: 5.8–7.0; highly adaptable — tall fescue handles clay and compacted soils; tolerates brief wet periods

Seeding Rate (per 1,000 sq ft and per acre)
-New lawns: 8–10 lb per 1,000 sq ft (≈ 350–435 lb per acre) — higher rate suits tall fescue’s bunch-type growth
-Overseeding: 4–5 lb per 1,000 sq ft (≈ 175–220 lb per acre)

How to Plant
Rake the seed lightly into the top of the soil for good seed-to-soil contact — do not bury deep — and keep the surface consistently moist while it establishes (perennial ryegrass in 5–10 days, tall fescue 10–14, bluegrass 14–28). First mow at 4.5–5 inches, then maintain at 3.5–4.0 inches (3.0 in minimum); mowing high promotes deeper roots and better drought tolerance. Favor fall fertilization (about 2–4 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft annually) and avoid heavy spring nitrogen, which can promote disease; iron applications deepen color without forcing growth.
