Product Description

A dense, carpet-like fine fescue that thrives in shade and takes a close mow — the fine-textured choice for a formal, low-input lawn.

Chewings Fescue (Festuca rubra subsp. commutata) is a cool-season perennial — it grows in the cooler parts of the year and, once established, lasts indefinitely. It is a bunch-type grass (it grows in tufts rather than spreading by runners), but unusually upright and very dense, which gives it a thick, carpet-like appearance. Its two standout traits are exceptional shade tolerance — it thrives under tree canopy where most grasses thin out — and its tolerance of close mowing down to 1.5 inches, which lets you keep a formal, manicured look (it is a staple on golf-course roughs and tees). Its density naturally crowds out weeds, and it adapts to sandy, acidic, and infertile soils on minimal water and fertilizer. Our seed is uncoated and tested for purity and germination.

Key Benefits

  • Exceptional shade tolerance: thrives from full sun to heavy under-canopy shade.

  • Dense, carpet-like turf: a thick, fine-bladed stand that suppresses weeds.

  • Close-mowing capability: cuts to 1.5 inches for a formal, manicured lawn.

  • Low maintenance: less water and fertilizer than traditional lawn grasses.

  • Adapts to poor soil: sandy, acidic, and infertile ground.

  • Clean, uncoated seed: no fillers, coatings, or dyes.

Best Uses

  • Shade lawns and under-canopy turf

  • Low-maintenance residential and commercial lawns

  • Golf-course roughs and tees

  • Fine-fescue blends for premium turf

  • Erosion control on slopes and banks

Important Notes

Sow shallow — surface-sow or rake in no deeper than ¼ inch. It is a bunch-type grass without rhizome spread, so it does not creep to repair wear the way Creeping Red Fescue does — foot-traffic tolerance is low to moderate, making it best for lawns, shade areas, and roughs rather than high-use play fields. In hot, humid climates, watch for summer patch.

Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?

Application Instructions

Conditions: USDA Zones 3–7; full sun to heavy shade; well-drained sandy, sandy-loam, acidic, or infertile soils; pH 5.0–6.5.

Seeding rate: New lawn 4–5 lb per 1,000 sq ft; overseeding 2–3 lb per 1,000 sq ft; about 25–35 lb per acre (roughly 15–20 lb/acre in a blend).

How to plant: Clear debris and lightly rake the surface, broadcast evenly, and surface-sow or rake in no deeper than ¼ inch. Plant late summer/early fall (preferred) or spring. Keep the seedbed consistently moist through the 10–21 day germination; dense stands develop progressively.

Fertility & mowing: Chewings Fescue is a grass, not a fertilizer. It has low needs — about 1–2 lbs of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per year. Mow anywhere from 1.5 inches (formal) to 3.5 inches (relaxed).
