Chewings Fescue (Festuca rubra subsp. commutata) is a cool-season perennial — it grows in the cooler parts of the year and, once established, lasts indefinitely. It is a bunch-type grass (it grows in tufts rather than spreading by runners), but unusually upright and very dense, which gives it a thick, carpet-like appearance. Its two standout traits are exceptional shade tolerance — it thrives under tree canopy where most grasses thin out — and its tolerance of close mowing down to 1.5 inches, which lets you keep a formal, manicured look (it is a staple on golf-course roughs and tees). Important Notes

Sow shallow — surface-sow or rake in no deeper than ¼ inch. It is a bunch-type grass without rhizome spread, so it does not creep to repair wear the way Creeping Red Fescue does — foot-traffic tolerance is low to moderate, making it best for lawns, shade areas, and roughs rather than high-use play fields.
