Product Description
Not sure whether your yard wants a sun grass or a shade grass? This blend figures it out for you — it lets the conditions decide which species takes the lead.
Old Cobblers Farm™ Wicked Tuff Turf Balanced Lawn Mix is a true three-way cool-season lawn blend (“cool-season” = grasses that grow most in spring and fall). “Three-way balanced” means each species contributes roughly equally: 40% improved perennial ryegrass for fast establishment and wear tolerance, 30% creeping red fescue for shade adaptation and fine texture, and 30% Kentucky bluegrass (a premium 98/85 grade) for self-repair and density.
What makes it “balanced” in practice is that the stand self-adjusts. In sunny areas, the bluegrass and ryegrass dominate; in shadier spots, the creeping red fescue takes over. So instead of excelling at one thing and failing at another, it performs consistently across mixed conditions — a true “hedge your bets” lawn. Kentucky bluegrass spreads by rhizomes (underground stems) to repair worn spots. It is 100% pure seed with no fillers, coatings, or dyes.
Key Benefits
• Consistent all-rounder: three species share the load, so the lawn performs evenly rather than peaking in one trait.
• Self-adjusting: sun favors bluegrass and ryegrass; shade favors creeping red fescue.
• Fast then lasting: quick ryegrass establishment up front, self-repairing bluegrass density over time.
• Cold-hardy: excellent cold tolerance for northern, cool-season yards (Zones 3–7).
• Pure seed: 100% pure, no fillers or dyes; includes 98/85 premium-grade bluegrass.
Best Uses
• Front lawns and general residential use
• Properties with varying sun and shade
• Yards where you’re unsure which species will perform best
• New lawns and overseeding for renewed thickness
Important Notes
• Traffic is moderate — not for high-traffic sports or heavy pet wear; creeping red fescue is the weak link under heavy wear.
• Drought tolerance is moderate — Kentucky bluegrass needs consistent moisture; not for extremely dry sites without irrigation.
• Not for deep shade (under 3 hours of sun).
• Avoid excess nitrogen — it can push the balance toward ryegrass and unbalance the stand.
• Seed only — not a fertilizer.
Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?
This is a deliberately even three-way formula — 100% pure seed with no fillers, coatings, or dyes — designed so the lawn adapts to whatever mix of sun, shade, and soil your yard has, rather than betting everything on one species. Dependable, versatile, and built for consistent results.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
-USDA Zones: 3–7
-Sun: 4–6 hours ideal; 3 hours minimum (creeping red fescue carries the shade)
-Soil pH: 6.0–7.0; loam ideal, tolerates clay and sandy loam; moderate-to-good drainage
Seeding Rate (per 1,000 sq ft and per acre)
-New lawns: 5–7 lb per 1,000 sq ft (≈ 220–305 lb per acre)
-Overseeding: 3–4 lb per 1,000 sq ft (≈ 130–175 lb per acre)
How to Plant
Rake the seed lightly into the top of the soil for good seed-to-soil contact — do not bury deep — and keep the surface consistently moist while it establishes (perennial ryegrass in 5–10 days, creeping red fescue 14–21, bluegrass 18–28). Maintain at 3.0–3.5 inches — mowing higher (3.5”+) favors the fescue, lower (2.5–3”) favors the bluegrass. Favor fall fertilization (about 2–3 lb nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft annually) and avoid excess nitrogen, which pushes the balance toward perennial ryegrass and can unbalance the stand.
