Product Description

Not a Fertilizer — a Trace-Mineral Soil Conditioner from the North Atlantic

Old Cobblers Farm Wicked Organics Kelp Meal is 100% dried, milled North Atlantic seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) — a single-ingredient soil conditioner and biostimulant rather than a conventional fertilizer. Its N-P-K is intentionally tiny (1-0.1-2); the value isn't in those numbers, it's in everything else kelp brings: over 70 naturally occurring trace minerals, amino acids, vitamins, and the natural plant compounds (including auxins and cytokinins) that support root development and help plants cope with stress. Think of it as a supplement that rounds out what a standard N-P-K fertilizer leaves out, and as food for the soil's microbial life — not as the thing that feeds heavy growth.

It's especially useful at planting and transplanting, where it supports root establishment, and through the season to help plants better tolerate drought, heat, and cold. Because it's gentle and slow-acting, it will not burn — it's safe on seedlings, transplants, and established plants at any stage. It pairs well with one of our N-P-K feeds: the feed supplies the macronutrients, the kelp rounds out trace minerals and biostimulant support.

A welcome note for many gardeners: this is a seaweed-only product, so it is fully vegan, it does not attract pets or wildlife the way bone- and blood-based feeds do, and it has no manure odor. It can also be steeped in water to make a liquid kelp extract for foliar feeding or transplant watering.

Key Benefits

70+ trace minerals — Over 70 naturally occurring trace minerals, amino acids, and vitamins round out the nutrition that basic N-P-K fertilizers don't provide.

Supports roots & establishment — Kelp's natural auxins and cytokinins support root development — especially useful at planting and transplanting.

Helps with stress tolerance — Bioactive compounds in kelp help plants better tolerate drought, heat, and cold stress.

Feeds soil biology — Feeds soil microbial life, supporting nutrient availability and biological activity over time.

Will not burn — Gentle and slow-acting — safe on seedlings, transplants, and established plants at any stage.

Vegan & odor-free — Seaweed-only, so it's vegan, doesn't attract pets or wildlife, and has no manure odor.

Where to use it: vegetables, herbs, and greenhouse crops; perennial beds, ornamentals, and vines; fruit trees and berries; turf and pasture; compost piles; and potting-soil mixes.

Application Instructions

-New garden beds: 1–2 lbs per 100 sq ft, mixed into the top 3 inches
-Small beds: ¼ cup per sq ft, mixed into the top 3 inches
-Transplants: 1–2 teaspoons per planting hole
-Established plants: 1–2 teaspoons per plant, monthly
-Trees: 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter; berries: 1 lb per 100 sq ft around planting
-Lawns/turf: about 10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft, spring and fall
-Containers: 1–2 tablespoons per gallon (about 2.5 lbs per cubic yard); seed beds: 1 lb per 100 sq ft
Steps:
1. Mix into the top few inches of bed or potting soil, into the planting hole, or top-dress and lightly incorporate around established plants.
2. Water in after applying; because it's non-burning you can place it right at the root zone.
3. Optionally, steep in water to make a liquid kelp extract for foliar feeding or transplant watering.
4. Apply 1–2 times per season, or monthly for heavy feeders and during stress periods.
When and how often: at planting/transplanting and 1–2 times per season (monthly for heavy feeders or during heat/drought stress).
What NOT to do: don't expect it to replace an N-P-K fertilizer (it's a conditioner/supplement — pair it with a feed for macronutrients), and don't over-think the dose; it won't burn.
