Phosphorus That Stays Put — One Application Builds Soil P for Years

Old Cobblers Farm Wicked Organics Bone Char is a single-ingredient phosphorus fertilizer: calcined animal bones, ground to a 0-16-0 amendment with a guaranteed 16% available phosphate. Calcination — high-heat processing — burns away the organic fraction and nitrogen, leaving a stable mineral phosphorus source with two defining properties: it dissolves slowly, becoming available to plants over seasons rather than weeks, and it barely leaches, staying in the root zone where you put it instead of washing through.

That stability changes how you use it. Where soluble phosphates feed for a season, bone char is a soil-building input — worked into beds, backfill, and raised-bed mixes once every 3–5 years to raise and hold soil phosphorus levels. It shines anywhere phosphorus is the limiting nutrient: bulb beds, root crops, fruit trees at planting, and organic gardens where synthetic phosphates are excluded. For faster early availability, pre-charge it: mix 50/50 with compost and keep moist for 10+ days before applying, letting soil biology begin unlocking the phosphate.

Key Benefits

Stays put, lasts years — Bone char's low solubility means the phosphate releases over seasons and stays in the root zone instead of leaching through — one application typically serves 3–5 years.

One ingredient, one number — Calcined animal bones and nothing else, with a clean guaranteed analysis of 16% available phosphate.

Zero nitrogen by design — No nitrogen at all — pure phosphorus for bulbs, root crops, and soils where P is the limiting nutrient and extra N is unwanted.

The pre-charging trick — Mix 50/50 with compost and keep moist 10+ days before applying — biology begins unlocking the phosphate for faster early availability.

Organic-program friendly — Suitable for certified organic production when approved by your certifier — the honest version of the organic claim.

Garden to field — Beds, backfill, containers, raised beds (5–10% by volume), and field rates to 1,000 lbs per acre.

Where to use it: flowering bulbs and perennials, fruit trees and shrubs (apples, citrus, figs, berries), vegetables and root crops (carrots, onions, potatoes), new plantings and transplants, raised beds, and phosphorus-deficient soils confirmed by a soil test.

Application Instructions

-New garden beds: 2–5 lbs per 100 sq ft, worked into the top 4–6 inches
-Established plants: 1–3 lbs per 100 sq ft as a side-dress
-New trees & shrubs at planting: 2–5 lbs mixed into the backfill per tree
-Established trees & shrubs: 1 lb per 2 inches of trunk diameter around the drip line
-Containers: 1–2 tablespoons per gallon of soil
-Raised beds: 5–10% by volume, mixed into the soil
-Field scale: 500–1,000 lbs per acre
Pre-charging (recommended):
-Mix 50/50 with finished compost, keep moist for 10+ days before application — biological activity begins unlocking the phosphate for faster early availability
Steps:
1. Soil test first — apply phosphorus where the test shows it's needed, and skip soils already high in P.
2. Optionally pre-charge with compost (50/50, moist, 10+ days).
3. Work the measured amount into the soil — top 4–6 inches for beds, backfill for trees, through the mix for containers and raised beds.
4. Water thoroughly, then let it work: one application typically serves for 3–5 years.
When and how often: at bed preparation or planting time, once every 3–5 years — its slow solubility is the point.
What NOT to do: do not apply to soils already high in phosphorus, do not expect quick-fix results — this is a slow, durable input by design — and do not surface-apply where incorporation is possible.

Ingredients

Bone Char / Calcined Animal Bones (100%) — The only ingredient. Bones are calcined — processed at high heat — which removes the organic fraction and leaves a stable mineral phosphate (guaranteed analysis: 16% available P₂O₅) that dissolves slowly and resists leaching.
