Feed the Bed, Not Just the Season — Strong Spears Now, Productive Crowns for Years
Product Description
Old Cobblers Farm Wicked Organics Asparagus Fertilizer is a blended organic plant food formulated for one of the garden's great long-term investments: the perennial asparagus bed. A well-kept asparagus patch produces for 15–20 years, but only if you feed the crowns, not just the spears. This 4-6-4 is built for that. Its nitrogen is split — of the 4% total, 2.5% is water-insoluble and released slowly by soil microbes, with 1.5% water-soluble for early green-up — so it feeds through the season without burning asparagus's shallow feeder roots. The 6% phosphate supports the root systems and crown structure that store next year's energy, and the 4% potash supports stress tolerance and the carbohydrate storage that drives future spear production.
Asparagus has a rhythm, and this feed follows it. The first feeding goes down in early spring, just before the spears push up, so nutrients are ready the moment growth starts. The second — the one gardeners most often skip and shouldn't — goes down after the final harvest, as the ferns take over: those ferns photosynthesize all summer to refill the crowns with the carbohydrates that become next spring's spears. Feed the fern, and you feed next year's harvest.
One ingredient note: this blend contains animal protein meals and bone char, so it is not a vegan product, and like other bone- and protein-based feeds it can attract pets; incorporate it and store it securely.
Key Benefits
Strong spring spears — Balanced nutrition timed to early spring fuels vigorous, uniform spear emergence.
Healthy crowns and roots — 6% phosphate supports the root systems and crown structure that store the energy behind every future harvest.
Builds next year's harvest — 4% potash supports fern growth and the carbohydrate reserves crowns build for next season — feed the fern, feed next year.
Slow-release, non-burning — The 2.5% water-insoluble nitrogen releases slowly through microbial breakdown — steady feeding with no burn on shallow asparagus roots.
For a long-lived bed — Asparagus beds last 15–20 years; this feeds the long game, building soil biology in permanent beds.
Resilience over the years — Better stress tolerance through heat and drought, and steadier harvests over many seasons.
Where to use it: established and new perennial asparagus beds — and it suits other perennial vegetable plantings on the same near-neutral, well-drained soil asparagus prefers.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
-Established beds (spring): 2–3 lbs per 100 sq ft, before spears begin to emerge
-Post-harvest: 1–2 lbs per 100 sq ft after the final harvest, as ferns begin actively growing
Timing:
-Early spring: just before spears emerge, so nutrients are ready as growth starts
-Post-harvest (late summer/early fall): as ferns grow and refill the crowns for next season — if you feed only once, choose this one
Steps:
1. Broadcast evenly over the root zone, starting at the crown and extending 2–3 feet on both sides of the row — asparagus roots spread wide.
2. If the bed is mulched, pull the mulch back, apply, then replace it after watering in.
3. Water thoroughly after application to move nutrients into the root zone and start the microbial breakdown.
4. Feed twice a year (early spring and post-harvest); if only once, choose post-harvest to rebuild the crowns.
When and how often: early spring (pre-spear) and after the final harvest (fern growth); post-harvest preferred if feeding once.
What NOT to do: do not cut the ferns down early (they're feeding next year's crowns — let them stand until they yellow), do not over-apply on shallow roots, and do not leave it surface-exposed where pets can reach it.
Ingredients
Ingredients
-Elemental Sulfur — Supplies sulfur as a nutrient and supports plant metabolism.
-Animal & Vegetable Protein Meals — Slow-release organic nitrogen released by microbial breakdown (the water-insoluble fraction). Note: includes animal-derived protein meals — this product is not vegan.
-Natural Sulfate of Potash — Natural potassium source for the 4% potash (stress tolerance, crown carbohydrate storage).
-Natural Nitrate of Soda — A natural nitrate source contributing the water-soluble nitrogen for early green-up.
-Bone Char — Supplies phosphate and calcium for root and crown development; animal-derived (calcined bone).
