Product Description
The pasture that refuses to quit — a cold-hardy, sod-forming forage grass that survives brutal northern winters and yields premium hay for decades.
Bromegrass (Bromus inermis and Bromus biebersteinii) is a cool-season perennial — it grows in the cooler parts of the year and, properly managed, a stand lasts 10–20+ years. It is sod-forming: it spreads by rhizomes (underground stems) to knit a dense, persistent sod that fills gaps, self-repairs hoof damage, and crowds out weeds. Its defining trait is exceptional winter hardiness — it reliably survives the harshest northern US and Canadian winters. This seed includes both leading types: Smooth Brome (the most widely planted, for palatable high-protein hay and pasture) and Meadow Brome (faster regrowth after cutting, better under rotational grazing). Both are deeply rooted, drought-tolerant, and famously the best grass companion for alfalfa. Our seed is uncoated and tested for purity and germination.
Key Benefits
• Exceptional winter hardiness: survives the harshest freezing winters in Zones 2–6.
• Sod-forming & self-repairing: rhizomes fill gaps, heal hoof damage, and block weeds.
• High-protein forage: palatable hay and pasture for beef, dairy, and horses.
• The alfalfa companion: the gold-standard 50/50 grass for premium mixed hay.
• Decades of yield: 10–20+ year stands; drought-tolerant deep roots.
• Clean, uncoated seed: no fillers, coatings, or dyes.
Best Uses
• Hay production — alone or blended with alfalfa
• Permanent pasture and grazing systems
• Waterway and conservation plantings
• Roadside and utility-corridor stabilization
• Cold-climate forage programs
Important Notes
Bromegrass is a tall agricultural forage and hay grass, not a fine residential lawn grass — plant it for pasture, hay, and conservation, not for a manicured yard. For premium mixed hay, blend it about 50/50 with alfalfa. Smooth Brome is the workhorse; the Meadow Brome in this mix is the one that bounces back fastest under rotational grazing.
Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?
Every bag of Wicked Tuff Turf seed is selected for high purity and strong germination, and tested so you know what you are planting — consistent, clean, uncoated seed for hay producers and pasture managers who demand long-lived performance.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
USDA Zones 2–6; full sun; loam, clay loam, or silt loam; pH 6.0–7.5; well-drained, tolerates moderate moisture.
Seeding rate: 15–20 lb per acre for a pure stand; 8–12 lb per acre in a mix with alfalfa or other legumes (about 50/50 brome/alfalfa by seeding rate for premium hay).
How to plant
Drill or broadcast ½–¾ inch deep onto a prepared seedbed. Plant late summer/early fall (preferred) or early spring. Keep moist through the 10–14 day germination; reaches full production by year two.
Cutting & grazing
For the highest-quality hay, cut at early head stage (often late May/early June). Use rotational grazing — Meadow Brome recovers faster than Smooth Brome.
