Product Description
Want color all season and a yard that feeds the bees — without the weekly mowing? A wildflower meadow does exactly that.
Old Cobblers Farm™ Wicked Tuff Turf Wildflower Mix is a multi-species blend of annual and perennial wildflowers. Annuals are plants that bloom and finish in one year; perennials come back year after year. Together they give you sequential blooming — different species flowering in turn — so something is in bloom from early spring through fall.
The annuals bloom the first year for immediate color, while the perennials spend that first season building roots, then return stronger each year. The result is a self-sustaining meadow (a naturalized planting of flowers and grasses, left mostly to grow on its own) that actually improves with age and supports honeybees, native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects all season. Wildflowers do best in lean soil — ground that is low in fertility — so you should not fertilize.
Key Benefits
• Instant & lasting color: annuals deliver first-year bloom; perennials return stronger every year.
• Pollinator habitat: nectar and shelter for honeybees, native bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.
• Three-season bloom: sequential flowering from early spring through the first frost.
• Low input: self-sustaining after establishment — one annual mowing, no fertilizer.
• Slope stabilization: established perennial roots help hold soil on banks and buffer strips over time.
Best Uses
• Pollinator meadows and habitat restoration
• Naturalized landscapes and low-mow meadow areas
• Conservation plantings and USDA/CRP programs
• Property borders, roadways, and buffer strips
• Low-input beautification for commercial and residential property
Important Notes
• ⚠ Meadow planting, NOT a walkable turf lawn: this is a low-mow flowering meadow with low foot-traffic tolerance — a lawn alternative, not a turf grass you walk and play on.
• ⚠ Surface-sow only: press the seed into the soil but do not bury it — many wildflower species need light to germinate.
• Do not fertilize — excess fertility promotes weeds over wildflowers.
• Expect weed competition in year one; mowing weeds to 4–6 in. helps wildflowers establish.
• Seed only — not a fertilizer.
Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?
Every bag of Wicked Tuff Turf seed is selected for high purity and strong germination — uncoated, with no fillers or dyes. We test for purity and germination so each bag performs consistently for homeowners, beekeepers, and land managers who expect real results.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
-USDA Zones: 3–9 (species mix varies by region)
-Sun: full sun (6+ hours preferred)
-Soil pH: 5.5–7.5; sandy, loam, or clay — most wildflowers prefer lean, unfertilized soil
Seeding Rate
-Small areas: 1–2 oz per 100 sq ft
-New plantings: 4–8 lb per acre (vary by desired density)
How to Plant
Clear existing weeds and debris first, and do not over-fertilize. Surface-sow in late fall (dormant seeding) or early spring: scatter the seed, then press it firmly into the soil with a roller or by walking over it — do not bury it, as many species need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist for the first 4–6 weeks. In the establishment year, mow weeds back to 4–6 inches so light reaches the young wildflowers. After that, mow just once a year in late fall or early spring, after seed drop.
