Product Description
Need green on the ground fast — post-construction, before winter, or to patch a worn lawn before company comes? This mix is engineered for speed.
Old Cobblers Farm™ Wicked Tuff Turf Speedy Lawn Seed is a fast-establishing cool-season lawn blend (“cool-season” = grasses that grow most in spring and fall). Half of it is improved perennial ryegrass, the fastest-germinating permanent cool-season turfgrass, so the lasting lawn comes in quickly. On top of that, a 10% annual ryegrass “nurse crop” — a fast, short-lived grass that protects the soil while the permanent grasses establish — greens up in just 3–5 days for immediate cover and erosion control.
Here’s the part to understand up front: the annual ryegrass is temporary by design. It looks a little lighter and coarser in the first season, then dies after one growing season (it’s an annual, not a perennial). The other 90% — perennial ryegrass, Chewings fescue, turf-type tall fescue, and Kentucky bluegrass — fills the space it leaves, so by year two you have a fully permanent stand. This is normal and expected. Because the blend is ryegrass-heavy, it needs consistent moisture and isn’t a drought or deep-shade lawn. It is 100% pure seed with no fillers or coatings.
Key Benefits
• Fast green-up: visible green in about 5 days; full initial coverage in 14–21 days.
• Quick permanent base: half improved perennial ryegrass for a lasting lawn that establishes fast.
• Versatile repair: new lawns, overseeding, and bare-spot patching.
• Wear-tolerant: moderate-to-high once established (keep traffic off the first 6–8 weeks).
• Pure seed: 100% pure with no fillers or coatings.
Best Uses
• Time-sensitive projects: post-construction, real-estate prep, events
• Fall overseeding when winter is approaching
• Bare-spot repair and patch seeding
• Erosion control on disturbed soil
• Rentals or anywhere needing quick curb appeal
Important Notes
• ⚠ Year-one annual-ryegrass transition: the 10% annual ryegrass looks lighter/coarser and dies after one season — the permanent 90% fills in by year two. If you want a fully permanent look in year one, choose a different mix.
• Ryegrass-heavy — needs consistent moisture; not for hot, dry climates without irrigation.
• Not for extreme shade (under 3 hours sun) or low-maintenance neglect.
• Keep traffic off during the first 6–8 weeks of establishment.
• Seed only — not a fertilizer (a high-phosphorus starter fertilizer at seeding helps).
Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?
This is a speed-first formula — 100% pure seed with no fillers or coatings — balancing the fastest-establishing permanent turfgrass (perennial ryegrass) with a quick nurse crop and a durable fescue/bluegrass backbone, so you get visible results in about a week and a permanent lawn behind it.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
-USDA Zones: 3–7
-Sun: 4–6 hours ideal; 3 hours minimum (Chewings fescue carries shade)
-Soil pH: 6.0–7.0; adaptable seedbed; soil at least 50°F to germinate; avoid waterlogged areas
Seeding Rate (per 1,000 sq ft and per acre)
-New lawns: 6–8 lb per 1,000 sq ft (≈ 260–350 lb per acre)
-Overseeding/repair: 4–5 lb per 1,000 sq ft (≈ 175–220 lb per acre)
-Heavy overseeding (bare spots): 8–10 lb per 1,000 sq ft
How to Plant
Rake the seed lightly into the top of the soil for good seed-to-soil contact — do not bury deep — and keep the surface consistently moist (this ryegrass-heavy mix needs steady water to establish). Expect annual ryegrass in 3–5 days, perennial ryegrass in 5–7, fescues 10–14, and bluegrass 14–21. First mow when grass reaches 3–4 inches (about 14–21 days); maintain at 2.5–3.5 inches, and keep foot traffic off for the first 6–8 weeks. A high-phosphorus starter fertilizer at seeding noticeably improves establishment speed; feed lightly and frequently rather than in heavy single doses.
