Product Description

Got wet, low-lying ground that drowns other summer crops — and ducks you’d like to keep around? Japanese Millet turns that soggy spot into a fast, high-energy plot.

Old Cobblers Farm™ Wicked Tuff Turf Japanese Millet (Echinochloa esculenta) is a warm-season annual grass — a grass that grows only in the warm months and dies at frost. Also called Billion Dollar Grass, it grows explosively once soils warm, building heavy biomass (lots of plant material) and high-energy grain in a short 60–90 day season.

Its standout trait is moisture: almost uniquely among summer grasses, it thrives in wet, heavy, and poorly drained soils where other crops drown — which is why it’s a favorite for marsh edges, wetland buffers, and managed impoundments (controlled, flooded wetland areas). The nutrient-dense grain is a heavy draw for ducks, geese, and gamebirds, and at 3–5 feet tall the stand doubles as wildlife cover. For livestock it makes palatable summer grazing and “green-chop” (freshly cut forage fed to animals).

Key Benefits

Premier waterfowl grain: a heavy crop of nutrient-dense seed that draws ducks, geese, and gamebirds.

Fast summer forage: grazing-ready in 45–60 days, filling the gap when cool-season pastures slow.

Wet-soil specialist: thrives in moist, heavy, poorly drained ground where most summer grasses fail.

Tall cover: grows 3–5 ft, providing habitat for gamebirds and songbirds.

Low maintenance: fast 5–10 day germination and quick canopy that outcompetes most weeds.

Best Uses

     Waterfowl and duck food plots

     Summer forage and emergency grazing

     Wildlife habitat and gamebird cover

Cover crop on wet and marginal land

     Warm-season annual in forage rotations

Important Notes

⚠ Frost-sensitive warm-season annual, NOT a permanent lawn: the first hard frost kills it — plan grazing or grain harvest before freeze. It is not a residential turf grass.

Plant only after soils reach a steady 60°F+ (warm-season crop).

Best on moist to wet ground — it is a wet-soil species, not a drought crop.

Seed only — not a fertilizer.

Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?

Every bag of Wicked Tuff Turf seed is selected for high purity and strong germination — uncoated, with no fillers or dyes. We test for purity and germination so each bag performs consistently for farmers, hunters, and land managers who expect real results.

Application Instructions

Conditions
-USDA Zones: 4–10 (warm-season; frost-sensitive)
-Sun: full sun
-Soil pH: 5.5–7.5; loam, clay loam, and muck — performs on wet, heavy soils

Seeding Rate
-Forage pure stand: 20–30 lb per acre
-Waterfowl plots: 25–35 lb per acre
-In a mix: 10–15 lb per acre

How to Plant
Wait until the soil holds a steady 60°F or warmer (late spring to early summer). Broadcast or drill ½–1 inch deep into a moist seedbed and keep it moist through the 5–10 day germination. For the best forage quality, graze or cut at the boot stage, about 45–60 days. For waterfowl, let the plant fully mature (75–100 days) so the grain heads develop for late-season attraction. Plan all grazing or harvest before the first hard frost, which terminates the crop.
