Product Description

The maximum-tonnage cool-season forage grass — fast to establish, protein-rich, and longer-lived than common annual ryegrass.

Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum, syn. Lolium italicum) is a short-lived perennial — it grows vigorously in the cool season and can persist 2–3 seasons under favorable management (1–3 depending on climate). It is the same species as common annual ryegrass, but this enhanced Italian type has better cold tolerance and longevity. It is an upright, aggressively tillering grass that produces the highest forage yield among cool-season grasses, with exceptional fall, winter, and early-spring growth — especially valuable in transition zones where warm-season pastures go dormant. The forage is highly digestible and protein-rich (12–16% crude protein), supporting strong gains in beef and high milk production in dairy. Our seed is uncoated and tested for purity and germination.

Key Benefits

Maximum forage yield: the highest biomass among cool-season grasses.

Longer-lived than annual rye: persists 2–3 seasons under favorable management.

High-protein forage: 12–16% crude protein, highly digestible.

Cool-season production: strong fall, winter, and early-spring growth.

Rapid establishment: germinates in 5–10 days; suppresses winter weeds.

Clean, uncoated seed: no fillers, coatings, or dyes; a strong nitrogen scavenger.

Best Uses

     High-production forage and hay systems

Winter grazing in transition and southern zones

     Cover crop and nutrient scavenging

     Overseeding dormant warm-season pastures

     Quick-establish cover and erosion control

Important Notes

This is the same species as annual ryegrass, positioned as the higher-yield, short-lived perennial type — if you want a true single-season temporary cover or southern winter overseeding grass, see our Annual Ryegrass instead. Persistence of 2–3 seasons depends on management and climate. It is a forage and cover grass with moderate foot-traffic tolerance — because of its rapid, tall growth it is not intended for fine residential lawns. For the best feed quality, cut at the boot to early head stage; monitor for crown rust in humid conditions.

Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?

Every bag of Wicked Tuff Turf seed is selected for high purity and strong germination, and tested so you know what you are planting — consistent, clean, uncoated seed for farmers, land managers, and growers who demand performance.

Application Instructions

Conditions
USDA Zones 4–9; full sun; loam, clay loam, or silt loam (performs well on heavier ground); pH 5.5–7.5; well-drained to moderately moist.

Seeding Rate
Pure stand (forage) 25–40 lb per acre; in a mix 10–20 lb per acre.

How to Plant
Broadcast or drill ¼–½ inch deep onto a prepared seedbed. Plant late summer/early fall (preferred) or early spring. Keep the soil moist through the 5–10 day germination (soil 45–65°F). First cut or grazing about 45–60 days after planting.

Cutting & Grazing
For hay, cut at the boot to early head stage for highest quality. For rotational grazing, leave a 3–4 inch stubble to drive rapid regrowth and multi-season persistence.

Ingredients

Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum, syn. Lolium italicum). 100% pure seed, no fillers, coatings, or dyes.
