Product Description

Need cover — fast? Buckwheat goes from seed to a weed-choking carpet of white flowers in about a month, then feeds the bees while it works.

Old Cobblers Farm™ Wicked Tuff Turf Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is a warm-season cover crop — a plant you grow to protect and improve the ground between cash crops. It is the fastest-establishing one available: it reaches canopy closure (when the leaves grow together and shade the soil) in just 2–3 weeks and full bloom in 30–40 days.

That speed makes it a natural “smother crop” — it shades out weeds before they can establish, so you can clean up weedy ground without herbicides. Its roots also “mine” phosphorus, pulling it from the soil and cycling it into a form your next crop can actually use. And its nectar-rich flowers make it a premier pollinator plant. Used as a green manure (a crop grown to be tilled back in to feed the soil), it conditions tired ground in a single short season.

Key Benefits

Fastest establishment: canopy closure in 2–3 weeks and full bloom in about a month.

Natural weed smother: rapid shading chokes out weeds — herbicide-free field clean-up.

Pollinator powerhouse: nectar-rich blooms feed honeybees, native bees, and beneficial insects.

Phosphorus cycler: unlocks soil phosphorus and makes it available to the following crop.

Thrives in poor soil: performs on acidic, sandy, low-fertility ground where other crops struggle.

Best Uses

Quick summer cover between cash crops

Weed suppression and field clean-up (smother crop)

     Pollinator habitat and honeybee forage

     Soil conditioning and phosphorus cycling

Wildlife food plots and beneficial-insect support

Important Notes

⚠ Frost-sensitive annual cover crop, NOT a permanent lawn: buckwheat is a short-lived summer cover, killed by the first hard frost — it is not a residential turf grass.

Mow or lightly incorporate at full bloom (about 30–40 days) to prevent volunteer seedlings from self-seeding.

Plant only after all frost risk has passed (soil 55°F+).

Seed only — not a fertilizer.

Why Choose Old Cobblers Farm™?

Every bag of Wicked Tuff Turf seed is selected for high purity and strong germination — uncoated, with no fillers or dyes. We test for purity and germination so each bag performs consistently for farmers, gardeners, and land managers who expect real results.

Application Instructions

Conditions
-USDA Zones: 3–10 (warm-season; frost-sensitive)
-Sun: full sun
-Soil pH: 5.0–7.0 (excellent on acidic soils); sandy, loam, clay, and poor-fertility ground

Seeding Rate
-Pure stand: 50–70 lb per acre
-In a mix: 20–40 lb per acre

How to Plant
Drill or broadcast ½–1 inch deep, late spring through mid-summer, only after all frost risk has passed (soil 55°F or warmer). It germinates in as little as 3–5 days and needs zero maintenance. To prevent volunteer seedlings (the crop reseeding itself), mow or lightly till it into the soil at full bloom, roughly 30–40 days after planting. The first hard frost will also terminate it.

Ingredients

-Buckwheat — Fagopyrum esculentum (also called Common Buckwheat, Japanese Buckwheat, Sweet Buckwheat).
