Application Guide

Natural vs Synthetic

Feature
Wicked Repellent
Synthetic Chemicals
Active Ingredient
Diatomaceous Earth (fossilized silica) — zero chemicals
Bifenthrin, Permethrin, or Carbaryl (synthetic neurotoxins)
How It Kills
Physical — abrades exoskeleton and dehydrates insect
Chemical — attacks insect nervous system
Resistance Risk
Zero — insects cannot develop resistance to physical damage
High — many insect populations are developing chemical resistance
Pet Safety
Food-grade — can be applied directly on dogs and cats for fleas
Toxic — keep pets off treated areas 24-48 hours
Child Safety
Non-toxic — avoid dust inhalation only
Neurotoxin — Caution/Warning signal word, restrict access
Pollinator Impact
Can harm bees on contact — apply when pollinators inactive
Highly toxic to bees, butterflies, and aquatic insects
Edible Garden
OMRI Listed — 0-day pre-harvest interval, safe on food crops
3-14 day pre-harvest interval depending on crop
Waterway Risk
Inert mineral — no aquatic toxicity
Highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates — buffer zones required
Soil Impact
Inert mineral silica — does not alter soil chemistry or biology
Kills beneficial soil insects and can disrupt soil microbiome
Residual
Works indefinitely while dry — reapply only after rain
Degrades in 30-90 days, releasing chemical byproducts into soil
Application Guide

How to Apply

1

Identify Target Pest & Location

Determine which crawling insects you are targeting and where they are active. DE works on contact — you need to apply it where insects travel, hide, or enter. Inspect baseboards, cracks, garden beds, foundation perimeter, and areas where you have seen pest activity.

2

Choose Application Method

For targeted indoor use: bulb duster or squeeze bottle to puff DE into cracks, crevices, behind appliances, and wall voids. For garden beds: hand duster or shaker container. For lawns: hand-crank seeder at 8-16 oz per 1,000 sq ft. For foliar spray: mix 2 oz per quart of water in a pump sprayer.

3

Apply Thin, Even Layers

Less is more with DE. Apply a thin, barely visible dusting — NOT thick piles. Insects will walk around heavy deposits but cannot avoid a thin film. For perimeter treatment, create a continuous 2-4 inch band. For carpets, sprinkle lightly and work into fibers with a broom.

4

Protect Pollinators

If applying outdoors, do NOT dust open flower blooms. Apply in early morning or evening when bees and butterflies are inactive. Target soil surface, plant stems, and undersides of leaves — avoid flower heads. Mow lawn before application to remove blooming clover and weeds.

5

Allow to Dry (Wet Application)

If you applied DE mixed with water, allow 1-2 hours for surfaces to dry completely. DE is ONLY effective as a dry powder — water is just a carrier to improve coverage on foliage. The dried white residue on leaf surfaces is the active insecticide.

6

Reapply After Rain or Watering

DE is rendered completely ineffective when wet. After any rain, heavy dew, or irrigation, reapply to all outdoor areas. Indoor applications in dry areas (cracks, wall voids, behind appliances) do not need reapplication and remain effective indefinitely.

7

Repeat for Life Cycle Pests

For fleas, bed bugs, and other pests with egg-laying cycles: reapply every 7-10 days for at least 3 applications. DE kills adults and larvae on contact but does not penetrate eggs. Repeated applications ensure newly hatched insects contact DE before they can reproduce.

8

Wear Dust Protection During Application

Food-grade DE is non-toxic but the fine silica dust can irritate eyes, throat, and lungs. Wear a dust mask (N95 recommended) and eye protection during application. Apply in calm conditions — avoid windy days outdoors. Allow dust to settle 15-20 minutes before allowing pets and children into the area.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked

  • Diatomaceous earth is effective against virtually any crawling insect with an exoskeleton. This includes ants, fleas, ticks, bed bugs, cockroaches, earwigs, silverfish, crickets, centipedes, millipedes, pill bugs, mites, aphids, and most beetle species including Japanese beetles, flea beetles, and Colorado potato beetles. It also deters slugs and snails as a barrier (though it does not kill them). DE is NOT effective against caterpillars (their mucus layer protects them) or flying insects that do not come into contact with treated surfaces. Earthworms are also unaffected due to their protective mucus coating.
  • Yes — food-grade diatomaceous earth is non-toxic to all mammals including dogs, cats, and livestock. It is commonly used as an anti-caking agent in animal feeds and can be applied directly onto pets to kill fleas, ticks, and mites. Work the dust gently into your pet's fur, avoiding the eyes, nose, and mouth as it can cause mechanical irritation to mucous membranes. For flea control, treat the pet AND their bedding, carpets, and resting areas simultaneously to break the flea life cycle.
  • No. Diatomaceous earth is ONLY effective as a dry powder. When wet, the microscopic diatom shells cannot abrade insect exoskeletons and the silica cannot absorb moisture from insect bodies. If you apply DE mixed with water (for foliar coverage), it must dry completely on the surface before it becomes active — typically 1-2 hours. After rain, heavy dew, or irrigation, all outdoor DE must be reapplied. Indoor applications in dry locations (wall voids, cracks, behind appliances) remain effective indefinitely.
  • Yes — DE is non-selective and will harm any insect with an exoskeleton that contacts it, including bees, ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps. To protect pollinators: never dust open flower blooms, apply in early morning or evening when pollinators are inactive, target soil surfaces and plant stems rather than flower heads, and mow lawns before application to remove blooming clover. DE settles into the soil surface within 24-48 hours, significantly reducing risk to flying beneficial insects after the initial application.
  • Outdoors: reapply after every rain event, heavy dew, or irrigation cycle — DE is useless when wet. In dry conditions, outdoor applications can remain effective for several weeks. Indoors: applications in dry areas like wall voids, behind baseboards, and under appliances last indefinitely and do not need reapplication. For active infestations of life-cycle pests (fleas, bed bugs), reapply every 7-10 days for at least 3 cycles to kill newly hatched insects that emerge from eggs.
  • This is critical: ONLY use food-grade DE for pest control. Food-grade DE contains amorphous (non-crystalline) silica and is safe for humans, pets, and food contact. Pool-grade (filter-grade) DE is heat-treated (calcined), which converts the silica to crystalline form — crystalline silica is a known carcinogen and extremely dangerous to inhale. Pool-grade DE should NEVER be used for pest control, in gardens, around pets, or anywhere near living spaces. Always verify the label says 'food grade' before purchasing.
  • Yes. Food-grade DE is OMRI Listed for organic crop production and can be applied directly on edible plants including tomatoes, peppers, squash, herbs, leafy greens, and fruit. There is no pre-harvest interval — you can harvest and eat the same day you apply. The FDA approves food-grade DE as a direct food additive at up to 2% concentration. Simply wash produce normally before eating to remove visible dust residue. Apply DE on soil around plant bases and on leaf surfaces (especially undersides) where pest insects feed.
